Zoning Reform Effort Launches with Draft Boundary Announcement!
Following a series ofCommunity Listening Sessions on Zoning Reform and multiple public meetings last year, the County Commission announced that they will be pursuing growth area focused zoning reform. This includes efforts to expand and/or refine zoning in areas of the County facing the greatest growth pressures and land use conflict.
The proposed growth area boundary, which defines the geographic limits of the zoning reform project, is now available for review! Once finalized, community discussions about zoning within that boundary will begin.
Upcoming Public Meeting
Community members have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed boundary, the process used create it, and other upcoming planning initiatives like the Belgrade ETJ transition and Growth Policy Updateat the Commission's regularly scheduled public meeting on May 12th, 2026. The meeting begins at 9 am in the Gallatin County Courthouse at 311 West Main Street, Bozeman in the Community Room on the 3rd Floor. Virtual participation is also possible via zoom link. The full meeting agenda and materials will be available prior to the meeting on theCommission's public meeting page.
The public isinvited and encouraged to register for updates and participate in the upcoming effort to implement and refine zoning within this boundary. Scroll down to see how to get involved below!

There are many ways to stay informed and get involved in shaping this project:
Register to get notified via email about project updates, opportunities to attend public meetings, and project updates.
Help name the project! A name gives the first impression of the project. Right now the project is called “Growth Area Focused Zoning Reform”but we are open to other ideas.
Review the draft boundary map and information about the process in the story map.
Attend a presentation or outreach event hosted by the Planning Department. Public outreach events will be scheduled and posted on the webpage
Share community meetings or events where we can share information about the project (pending staff availability), by calling the Planning Department 406-582-3130 or emailing envision@gallatin.mt.gov.

Submit comments: Written comment may be submitted to envision@gallatin.mt.gov prior to any scheduled hearing and verbal comment may be provided at any public meeting or hearing, either in person or virtually.

The County Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission, and Planning Board held 3 Community Listening Sessions on Zoning Reform to kick-off conversations about re-evaluating the County's zoning framework followed by debriefs. The Commission requested additional information on a subset of reform options.

At their regularly scheduled public meeting on October 21, 2025,the Commission considered information compiled by the Planning Department, feedback from the Planning Board, and public comment before directing the Planning Department to begin work on zoning reform areas in the County that are facing, or expected to face, the greatest growth pressures and land use conflict and to continue engaging folks outside of the growth area.
